Title: Reagan Flag
Size: 31.75 cm x 38.1 cm Medium: Colored Pencil on drawing paper Completion: April 2019 Exhibition TextThis flag embodies the ideals of Ronald Reagan High School along with MPS and IB. It was inspired by the Reagan, MPS, and IB mission statements which all strive for diversity and a successful education. The blue symbolizes intelligence, the white represents power and unity, the three circles represent Reagan, IB, and MPS all linking together with a husky paw print in the center.

Planning
Inspiration
For this assignment, it was important to create a flag that represents the Reagan community through the connection of the International Baccalaureate program, Milwaukee Public Schools, and Reagan. As another part of my research, I looked into the mission statements of all three to try to make connections.
|
I was also inspired by the flag of Peru for the design and layout.
The red and white represent the Inca culture, and were said to be chosen by Jose de San Martin, The Liberator, a leader in the independence of South America. The cornucopia in the coat of arms represents prosperity. |

Sketches
These were the 15 flag designs I created initially. Evidently, I incorporated a lot of blue and white into my designs because blue represents intelligence and white represents unity, two characteristics that MPS, Reagan, and IB all strive for. I also included these colors a lot because they are our school's colors.
Circles and triangles were also used a lot because circles represent unity and triangles represent stability. |
Experimentation
For a lot of my experimentation, I was working on what symbols to incorporate as well as what colors I wanted to work with. It was really important to use colors and symbols that represent what Reagan, MPS, and IB are about.

Process
(Click on the images to see the sketches better. The pencil marks are light because I needed to erase them later)
Then, I used a circle template to make sure each of them were the same size. I used the 2 5/8 inch diameter template because I didn't want the circles to be too large or too small.
I also drew vertical lines touching the outside of the first circle I drew so that I could make sure all of the circles were aligned perfectly. |
Reflection
Critique
Overall, I really like how my final piece turned out. I think it meets the guidelines for a flag that gets its message across, and I think that it was definitely the best of my original sketches. I think if I were to do this again, I would work on making it look more like a flag specific to Reagan, but I think the paw print is a good detail to keep. I also really like the colors that were chosen as well as the symbols and their meaning. I definitely think that it is simplistic enough to be seen from a distance, and for a child to be able to recreate it, while still carrying heavy symbolism.
